American Library Association Annual Meeting 2017

This guide contains the ALA 2017 Poster Presentation by NCU Librarians.

Participants

From 2014 to 2016, a total of 412 participants used the research consultation service. There were 171 respondents to our Research Consultation Satisfaction Survey: 96% (165) students, 3% (5) staff, and 0.6 % (1) faculty. There were 14 respondents to our Faculty and Dissertation Chair Research Consultation Surveys.

Materials

  • Consultations are scheduled using Springshare LibCal and are conducted via Citrix GoToMeeting.
  • Research Consultation Request Form represents the reference interview.
  • Students report their satisfaction and skills learned via the Research Consultation Satisfaction Survey.
  • Dissertation chairs and regular faculty complete separate surveys which assess the effect the research consultation has had on their students' work. All surveys were created using Qualtrics.

Procedure

Patrons initiate the appointment process by completing a LibCal request form which asks for details on their research topics, as well as example articles. They receive email confirmation of their appointment and a reminder email one day before. Both emails include the meeting access link and information for first-time users.

Online consultations are held using GoToMeeting and follow a similar format among the librarians. A typical one-hour session for a doctoral student may cover how to effectively search for their dissertation topic in the EBSCO Discovery Service, how to find citing articles using Google Scholar, and how to locate published dissertations similar to their topic.

Following the session, the librarian sends the patron an email that reviews the skills and resources covered. This email also includes the link to the Research Consultation Satisfaction Survey. If the consultation appointment was with a student, a separate survey is sent to the student’s dissertation chair (if enrolled in the doctoral program) or faculty member (if enrolled in coursework).
