This page covers the basic tutorials and instructions pertaining to the Chair/Mentor role in the IRB process, and will address the responsibilities of the Chair/Mentor.

What is the role of the IRB?

• Protection of Human Participants
• Handle general IRB process-related questions

What is the role of the Chair/Mentor?

• Encourage researchers to review the IRB website for resources
• Encourage researchers to attend Group Writing Sessions
• Encourage researchers to attend Office Hours
• Support the researcher in terms of methodology 

When a student completes their IRB application and submits it for the first time, the application will be sent directly to the Chair/Mentor. The Chair/Mentor will only need to verify two things:

1. Verify that you are the Chair/Mentor
2. Verify that the title of the study aligns with what the student has been working on

Once verified, the Chair/Mentor may submit the application to the IRB. No further action is required beyond these two items. 

Please note that the application will only be submitted to the Chair/Mentor for the student's first submission. Beyond this, communication will be between the student and IRB/IRB reviewers. 

To submit a student's IRB application, please follow the steps below: 

1. Login to IRBManager
2. Click on the "xForms" tab,
3. Click on the "IRB Application" that you would like to submit,
4. Verify that you are the Chair/Mentor,
5. Verify that the title of the study aligns said student's study, 
6. Scroll to the bottom of the application,
7. If the information is correct select "Yes" for "Chair/Mentor Determination,"
8. Import/upload your CITI training, 
9. Click "Next," then "Submit"
